The classes were very nice and in small groups. The football game I went with Juan was fantastic, felt the rivalry between Argentina and Brazil.I had a great time with all of you. It was great hanging out here after class and eat and talk together, had lots of fun.You are a great team, keep up the wonderful work! Harald Hannema, Amsterdam, Holland.

This letter of reference is in regard to Florencia, an excellent Spanish translator and teacher. I developed a wonderful relationship with her last summer during my visit to Argentina. Not only did she help me in my studies, she also gave me some great insight on the country and how I would benefit from becoming bilingual. When I return to Argentina (someday), it would be an honor to get into contact with Florencia once again. I continue to keep in contact with her and encourage others to study with her. Best Wishes to anyone interested in learning the Spanish language. This Spanish Program is a wonderful resource for you.Ann-Marie Hershey, California, USA.

As a Law Professor, I am a professional teacher as an older student, I was hesitant to study a new language both of my teachers here at IBERO were excellent. They were very patient with my numerous mistakes and very encouraging. I went from zero Spanish to conduct basic conversations. All of the other students were very serious about learning Spanish. Overall, I would recommend both Buenos Aires and IBERO School to anyone. Llew Gibbons, USA

Your Questions Answered: General Interest & Culture in Buenos Aires

1. Why study Spanish in Buenos Aires/Argentina? (Focus on the accent, culture, city life)

Answer: Studying Spanish in Buenos Aires, Argentina, offers a truly distinctive experience for several reasons:

Unique "Porteño" Accent & "Vos": Buenos Aires is famous for its "Rioplatense" Spanish, characterized by the "voseo" (using "vos" instead of "tú") and a distinct pronunciation of "ll" and "y" (sounding like the "zh" in "measure" or "sh" in "shoe"). While different, this accent is consistent and highly melodic, making it engaging to learn and widely understood. Mastering it means you'll be well-prepared to understand other Spanish accents, too.

Rich & Diverse Culture: Buenos Aires is often called the "Paris of South America" due to its European architecture, grand boulevards, and sophisticated cultural scene. It's the birthplace of tango, a city of passionate football fans, and boasts countless museums, theaters (like the world-renowned Teatro Colón), art galleries, and historic neighborhoods. This vibrant cultural backdrop provides endless opportunities to engage with the language outside the classroom.

Dynamic City Life: Buenos Aires is a city that never sleeps. From charming cobblestone streets in San Telmo to the green parks of Palermo and the bustling downtown core, each neighborhood offers a different facet of city life. There are cafes for lingering, bustling markets, lively nightlife, and a constant buzz that invites you to participate and practice your Spanish in real-world situations. The friendly nature of "Porteños" (people from Buenos Aires) encourages conversation and makes it easier to integrate.

2. What are the top things to do in Buenos Aires while studying?

Answer: While studying at Ibero Spanish School, you'll be perfectly positioned in downtown Buenos Aires to explore many of the city's highlights. Here are some top things to do:

Experience Tango: Take a tango lesson (often offered by Ibero or at local milongas), watch street performers in San Telmo, or attend a professional tango show.

Explore Historic Neighborhoods: Wander through the colonial streets of San Telmo (especially for its Sunday market), visit the iconic Plaza de Mayo and Casa Rosada, and explore the elegant Recoleta Cemetery (resting place of Eva Perón).

Visit Cultural Landmarks: Discover the majestic Teatro Colón (opera house), browse the stunning El Ateneo Grand Splendid bookstore (a converted theater), and explore various museums like MALBA (Latin American Art Museum of Buenos Aires) or the Evita Museum.

Enjoy Green Spaces: Relax in the expansive parks of Palermo, including Bosques de Palermo and the beautiful Rose Garden (El Rosedal).

Indulge in Gastronomy: Savor traditional Argentine asado (barbecue), try delicious empanadas, enjoy a coffee at a historic café notable like Café Tortoni, and sip on exquisite Argentine Malbec wine.

Take a Day Trip: Escape the city hustle with a visit to Tigre and the Paraná Delta, a picturesque river town perfect for boat tours and exploring markets. You could also cross the river to Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay for a day.

Witness Football Passion: If you're in season, try to catch a live fútbol match at iconic stadiums like La Bombonera (Boca Juniors) or El Monumental (River Plate) for an unforgettable experience.

3. Tips for practicing Spanish outside of the classroom.

Answer: Maximizing your Spanish practice outside of classes is essential for rapid progress. Here are some tips:

Engage with Locals: Don't be shy! Porteños are generally very friendly and appreciate efforts to speak their language. Strike up conversations with shopkeepers, taxi drivers, baristas, and anyone you encounter in daily life.

Participate in Spanish Language Exchange Meetups: Look for language exchange events (like MundoLingo) where locals want to practice English and you can practice Spanish. These are great ways to meet people and use your skills in a social setting.

Join Cultural Activities: Attend Ibero's organized conversation workshops and city tours. Beyond that, consider taking tango lessons, a cooking class (to learn how to make empanadas!), or even a local sports club. These activities naturally create opportunities to speak Spanish.

Immerse Yourself in Media:

Watch Argentine TV & Movies: Start with subtitles (Spanish or English) and gradually try to remove them. Netflix and YouTube have many Argentine productions.

Listen to Argentine Music & Podcasts: Tune into local radio stations, create playlists of Argentine artists, or find podcasts on topics you enjoy.

Read Local Materials: Pick up a local newspaper, magazine, or even children's books to start.

Live with Locals: At Ibero's onsite accommodation with other students.

Order in Spanish: Always use Spanish when ordering food, buying groceries, or asking for directions. Challenge yourself to avoid English in these everyday situations.

Explore Different Neighborhoods: Each barrio has its own vibe. Exploring them on foot, asking questions, and observing daily life will expose you to new vocabulary and cultural nuances.
