Argentina Language

Learn Spanish in Argentina and enjoy our traditional food

Argentine people have a reputation for their love of eating. Social gatherings are commonly centered on sharing a meal. Invitations to have dinner at home is generally viewed as a symbol of friendship, warmth, and integration. Sunday family lunch is considered the most significant meal of the week. Here are some of the most significant delicacies not to be missed.

Locro A dish hailing from Argentina’s Andean northwest, locro is a hot and hearty white corn based stew or soup filled with grains, meat, vegetables and corn. It’s a heavy comfort food.

Argentine asado, the sacred weekend ritual of Argentine families, goes well beyond steak. The grill and cooking style used is similar, but an asado selection might include other cuts of beef, sausages, mollejas (thymus glands) and other offal, pork, and chicken.

Empanadas, the ubiquitous Latin American savory turnover. Flaky or doughy, empanadas come stuffed with just about anything: spinach, cheese, acelga (Swiss chard), mushrooms, ground beef, chicken, even seafood. On balance, Argentine empanadas are usually baked, but occasionally you’ll find them fried, especially in the north. Empanadas are the perfect traveller food — they are cheap, quick, high comfort and often oozing with cheesiness.

Milanesa is at the top of “typical Argentine food” lists, is a pounded piece of chicken or beef breaded and fried or baked. Think schnitzel. It’s a common lunch menu item and is usually served with fries or potatoes, or slapped between bread to make a sandwich. Considering that we had eaten milanesas for months, from Guatemala on south, we didn’t often seek them out while snacking in Argentina.

Medialunas Although usually eaten in the morning, medialunas (small croissants) are often sided with coffee throughout the day. Medialunas come in two broad categories – grasas (salty) and manteca(slightly sweet). When you find a good medialuna, you’ll know it instantly: it melts in your mouth.

Dulce de leche (literally “sweet of milk”), is a caramelized liquid made from thickened, sweetened, boiled cream. While many find it overly sweet, we enjoyed it. If you don’t enjoy the stuff, you may have a difficult time navigating Argentine sweets.

Wine in Mendoza

Mendoza, Argentina´s oldest and best-known wine region is the epicenter of Malbec, Argentina’s most famous red wine varietal. Located on a high-altitude plateau at the edge of the Andes Mountains, the province is responsible for roughly 70 percent of the country's annual wine production. Here, the regions of Lujan de Cuyo, Maipu and the Uco Valley are home to some of the biggest names in Argentinean wine.

Lujan de Cuyo region is home to some of the most famous names in Argentinean wine, including Catena Zapata,Bodega Septima and Cheval des Andes. Unsurprisingly, Malbec is the region's most-important grape variety, producing bold, intensely flavored red wines. But Malbec is not the only grape thriving here. Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Torrontes also thrive well.

Uco Valley (Valle de Uco)

Approximately 75 minutes south of the city of Mendoza, the Uco Valley (Valle de Uco) is Mendoza's newest wine region, and the one getting the most attention internationally right now. It is known especially for Malbec, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Semillon and Torrontes production. The breathtaking natural scenery makes it one of the most picturesque regions in Mendoza.

The area is known for its high altitude, with the Tupungato region having vineyards planted almost 4,000 feet above sea level. In addition to producing award-winning Malbecs and blends, the area is also emerging as a source for premium quality white wine varietals such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and even Torrontes.

Maipu

The region of Maipu, south and east of Mendoza city, has approximately 20 wineries. Some of the best are La Rural, Familia Zuccardi and Finca Flichman. While you won’t need as much time in Maipu as the other regions, it is not a region to skip, and the additional olive oil tasting and biking opportunities provide a diversion from the Lujan de Cuyo and Uco Valley tourist experiences.

Argentina Native Language Spanish

Study Spanish Abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Studying Spanish in Argentina versus Chile

If you study abroad in Argentina or Chile you’ll see for yourself just how different one language can be. Both Chilean Spanish and Argentinian Spanish are quite different than the Spanish language you learn in a textbook.

In Argentina, the language has a lot of influence from Spain, which leads to some significant differences from the Mexican Spanish that is most often taught in the United States. For example, Argentinians don’t use the word “tu” as “you”. Instead, they use the word “vos”. Verbs conjugate a little differently and accents change places with vos, so it takes some getting used to. And of course, if you’re not prepared for an entirely new word replacing a common one (how many times do you say or hear “you” every day?) you can get really confused, really fast.

When you get to Argentina, you’ll also notice their accent when it comes to pronouncing  the double L and the letter Y in words like “llamar” and “ayer”. Both are pronounced as a sort-of “sh” sound, like the “s” in the word “treasure”. While this doesn’t change the words themselves, it does completely change the way they sound and can be confusing, especially if you have any previous Spanish knowledge and are not used to pronouncing the “sh”.

Chilean speakers also have an accent and approach to Spanish that can stumble you up. They speak extremely fast (emphasis on the extreme part) and, as if trying to get the words out even faster, they discard letters to shorten them up. This is most easily noticed in words that like gracias with the removal of the “s” at the end, making it gracia. The point is, you can expect that a lot of the words you learned in school will sound very different coming from a Chilean speaker’s mouth. Couple this with the enormous vocabulary of slang that is unique to Chile and you’ll find you’ve got a lot to learn!

Of course, learning is exactly why many of us enjoy going abroad; to experience new cultures and new ways of thinking, being, and even speaking. I appreciate the Argentine accent in Buenos Aires, even though the accent is half of my struggle to understand everyone around me at times. Regarding cultures, languages, and accents, it’s true that variety is the spice of life.
